Kammie Noel, an 18-year-old graduating senior at North Hagerstown High School, loves numbers.

She loves everything about mathematics, from the numbers to the problem solving, to the formulation and figures.

“I really like math,” Kammie said. “With math, you have to solve the problem to get the answer, and that’s it.”

In the fall, Kammie will attend Salisbury (Md.) University, where she will major in mathematics and minor in secondary education.

Her long-term plans are to teach math to middle- or high-school students.

As Kammie prepares to graduate from North High, she will walk the stage with a sash representing her position as co-president of the National Honor Society.

She will wear another sash representing the International Baccalaureate Career Program, and a third sash in honor of her participation in the high school’s Teacher Academy program.

Kammie’s graduation gown also will include a gold cord and medal for earning a 4.3 grade-point-average. She earned at least 14 credits in honors classes, plus she met the requirements outlined in the school district’s University System of Maryland Completer.

Kammie also has earned several awards as a senior.

They include a Certificate of Meritorious Service for completing 150 or more hours of community service, and the Academic Excellence Award for earning a GPA of 3.7 or higher through the first semester of her senior year.

Kammie also earned the Career Technology Education Award for Excellence for her performance in the school’s Academy of Teaching, a program for students interested in teaching careers.

And she earned several scholarships this year, including the Britney Carle Memorial Scholarship, which is given to a Teacher Academy student in memory of former student Britney Victoria Carle.

St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hagerstown awarded Kammie the Kristin Bowen Swanson Memorial Medal and Scholarship in the amount of $1,613.72. The scholarship from her church recognizes her career path in secondary education and math.

“Oh my gosh, I felt so honored,” she said. “In the past couple years, I have really grown so much in my faith. This was wonderful.”

Kammie also received a Presidential Scholarship from Salisbury University.

Kammie’s career in sports included volleyball during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She also participated in cross country and indoor and outdoor track during her senior year.

This school year, she was a member of the first team for All-Washington County girls cross country.

Unfortunately, school closures due to COVID-19 meant the cancellation of outdoor track this spring.

“I was just devastated,” she said. “I really look forward to outdoor track.”

Kammie said the cancellation of senior activities due to coronavirus also has been disappointing.

“It was just heartbreaking,” she said. “I would have never thought in a million years it would have ended like this.”

Kammie is the daughter of Scott and Lisa Noel of Hagerstown. She has an older sister, Caitlin, and a younger brother, Nick.
