Roller Derby – Mason Dixon Roller Vixens  

Roller Derby enjoyed its heyday from the 1940’s – 1970’s.  People gathered around the television to watch thrilling games that featured massive collisions, and women throwing elbows.  Then the sport just seemed to fade away. Recently there has been a resurgence in Roller Derby, but the focus has shifted more to athleticism and empowering women.  This strategy seems to have appeal, since Hagerstown’s local team, the Mason Dixon Roller Vixens, is having no trouble recruiting women from all walks of life, from business women to a mother of eight.  The team comes together from February through December, not only to practice and compete, but also to support each other as women. Attend a game at Turner’s Skating and you’ll see players working together and showing off their individuality and skills during the games.  More than 200 spectators are happy to line up outside the door to hand over $10 to sit beside the rink and cheer on their favorite players and teams. Flyers are provided that give the basic rules of the game, and if you have questions, nearby spectators are glad to help.
